VC KMU Signed MOU for PhD Programs with University of Leicester, UK
Prof. Dr. Mohammad Hafizullah and Prof. Dr. Shad Mohammad briefed UoL management on the aims and vision of KMU specially the establishment of Institute of Basic Medical Sciences and the role of PhD scholars when they return back to KMU. KMU team was briefed on the structure of UoL, its various departments and the admissions in medical school and other disciplines.
After detailed discussion regarding placement of various PhD scholars in UoL, it was decided that a specially designed master program will be developed by Dr. Chris Cane Director of Taught Postgraduate Programes UoL. It was also mutually agreed that KMU scholars should arrive in Leicester in first week of April 2010.
A meeting was also held with Annette Cashmore, Director, Centre of Excellence for Teaching & Learning UoL. In that meeting Dr. Cashmore briefed the KMU team about the development of CoE, its responsibilities and achievements. Dr Cashmore also informed the KMU team about the Virtual Education Centre for higher education, health professionals and general public. During the discussions it was agreed that one scholar of medical education of KMU will go for curriculum development plus QA and other for evaluation.
At that occasion an MOU was signed regarding the upcoming PhD programe for KMU scholars by VC KMU Prof. Dr. Mohammad Hafizullah and VC UoL Prof. Dr. Bob Burgess, while Prof. Dr. Shad Mohammad Dir.AA&QA KMU, Dr. Michel Green Head of International Office UoL, Dr. Shahid Hussain International Officer UoL and Munir Lon from Campus Consultancy were also present at the occasion. VC of UoL also presented offer letters for admissions in various PhD disciplines to Prof. Dr. Mohammad Hafizullah. During the discussions VC UoL also offered the shadow places for senior staff of KMU which was highly appreciated by KMU team.
The research areas which were identified for KMU scholars were Physiology, Cell Physiology, Neuro Sciences, Electrophysiology, Biochemistry, Genetics, Protein Biochemistry and Structural Pharmacology.
Later on KMU team visited the Department of Cardiovascular Sciences at Glenfield Hospital Leicester. It is worth mentioning here that the Department of Cardiovascular Sciences is one of the largest centers in UK and apart from providing services it has also a very strong research program.
Miss Aliena Badshah honored on her tremendous academic career
Parents of Aliena Badshah, Prof. Dr. Javed Badshah Chairman Department of Urdu Islamia College Peshawar and Prof. Dr. Rukhsana Javed Chairperson Department of Economics Jinnah College Peshawar along with Register KMU Dr. Jalil Ur Rehman and Director AA & QA KMU, Prof. Dr. Shad Mohammad were also present at the occasion.
VC KMU Prof. Dr. Mohammad Hafizullah while talking at the occasion congratulated Aliena Badshah and her parents on her remarkable achievements during her academic carrier. He hoped that she will not only continue her academic achievements but she will also become an exemplary medic for the ailing humanity of this region in near future. He advised her to keep intact her struggle towards achieving the better goal set by her with the consultation of her parents and teachers. He suggested her to opt as Medical Education Specialist after completion of MBBS being the most flourishing and important field of Medical Profession. Later on VC KMU Prof. Dr. Mohammad Hafizullah awarded Aliena Badsha a book titled Sword of Allah and a certificate of appreciation on behalf of Governor NWFP Owais Ahmed Ghani.
It is worth mentioning here that Aliena Badshah D/O Prof. Dr. Javed Badshah was born on 08th February, 1987 at Peshawar.She got her early schooling from Presentation Convent High School, Peshawar and Holy Trinity School, London, UK. She Passed matriculation examination from University Model School Peshawar in 2002, and stood 1st in school, securing 743/850 marks.
She did F.Sc from Jinnah College for Women, University of Peshawar in 2004, and grab 1st position in all Secondary Boards of N.W.F.P, securing 977/1100 marks. She received the Presidential Award in 2007 for excellent performance in Intermediate examination. Aliena Badshah got admission in KMC, Peshawar in December, 2004 and stood 3rd in the 1st and 2nd MBBS Professional Examinations, securing 933/1300 and 565/800 marks respectively. She secured 1st position in the 3rd MBBS Professional examination, 2009, obtaining 435/600 marks and also topped the subject of Community Medicine. She participated in declamation contests at school and college level and has delivered speeches in English, Urdu and Pashto at various speech competitions.

Earth Breaking Ceremony of Development of Khyber Medical University Peshawar as Phase I held
Dy.Dir. P&D Mr. Noor Shah Jehan Khattak has presented a detailed presentation about the up coming three development projects of KMU. He said that the new developmental projects of KMU consist of three parts with total estimated cost of Rs. 281.015 Million which include construction of main Academic Block with estimated cost of Rs. 150.138 Million while with estimated cost of Rs. 51.354 Million Administration Block and with Rs.79.523 Million Multi purpose Halls will be constructed in Phase-I.
While elaborating these projects he said that main Academic Block will be consisted of a basement and 4 Storey’s, while Administration Block and Multiple Purpose Halls will be construct of Ground floor with 2 storey and double height respectively. These all three buildings will have the covered area of 123896sqft and the project will be completed with in 20 months.
While talking at the occasion as chief guest VC KMU Prof. Dr. Mohammad Hafizullah has said that today is an historic moment because that dream has be come nearer to reality which saw the people and medical professionals of the province in the last 20-30 years. He said that due to completion of the new proposed buildings of KMU we will be able to overcome all these hurdles due to which medical education in the province has not got due importance in the past.
He said that after approval of site plan, PC-I and allocation of funds for the construction of phase I is a remarkable achievement and we hope that today after holding earth breaking ceremony of three different projects at a time will ensure the completion of phase-I well in time. He urged upon the contractors not to compromise on quality and standards during the construction. He also hoped that all the three projects will be completed well in due time.

Dr Shahnaz Akhtar Joins KMU as Controller of Examination
On further promotion to Associate and then Professor of Obstetrics & Gynecology she served KMC & PGMI, Peshawar. During serving as Head of the Department she remained supervisor for M.C.P.S & F.C.P.S candidates and she also remained in charge of diploma course in Obstetrics & Gynecology (D.G.O) from 1999. Recently she was serving as Professor and Head of the Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology, PGMI LRH Peshawar.
VC KMU Prof. Dr. Mohammad Hafizullah congratulated her on joining KMU team and he hoped that after appointment of Prof. Dr. Shahnaz Akhtar as Controller of Examination, the Examination Department of KMU will be able to conduct examination more effectively and the examination process will become more transparent. He urged that introduction of new method of Examinations at KMU i.e. MCQ’s and SEQ’s will bring more fruit and it will help to examine all the medical students of various levels on scientific and modern methods of evaluation.

MBBS 2nd Professional Annual Examination 2009 Schedule
According to the notification issued by Examination Department the MBBS 2nd Professional Annual Examination Session 2009 Pharmacology paper will be held on January 5, 2010 while that of Pathology and Forensic Medicine papers will be held on 8th and 11th January 2010 at Khyber Medical College Peshawar, Khyber Girls Medical College Peshawar, Saidu Medical College Swat, Gomal Medical College D.I. Khan and Ayub Medical College Abbottabad examination centers.
The Controller of Examination has directed all the concern students to submit their examination forms with in the due time and date in their respective medical colleges. After the expiry of the date fixed for double late fees i-e December 20, 2009 no examination forms shall be entertained

First Cycle of Clinical Workshops---Report
The KMU Directorate of R&D has developed a comprehensive clinical research capacity development programme for faculty and postgraduate students of health academic institutions. The programme includes training in the three basic essential fields of health research: Research Methodology and Proposal Development, Biostatistics and Bioethics. The programme which comprises of five workshops is planned to be implemented in regular 6 months cycles. The five workshops offered are:
- Health Research Orientation Workshops These two days workshops familiarize participants with the fundamental concepts of health research and give them an overview of the research process. The primary objectives are to improve understanding of research and motivate the participants to do research. These workshops are held on a monthly basis in rotation at the different public sector health academic institutions.
- Medical Writing Workshops The one day medical writing workshops take the participants through the various ways of communicating the results of their research with main focus on writing manuscripts for publication as research reports and journal articles and presentations at conferences and symposia. The workshop is held monthly in rotation at the different public sector health academic institutions.
- Research Methodology and Proposals Development Workshops Through five days Research Methodology and Proposals Development workshops participants are guided and facilitated to develop research proposals. At the end of the workshop participants are expected to have developed a first draft of their research proposal. Further development and finalization of the proposal is encouraged through mentoring provided by the KMU Directorate of R&D. The workshop is held every three months in the conference room of Khyber Medical College.
- Biostatistics and SPSS Workshops The three days biostatistics and SPSS workshop gives hands-on training on Biostatistics the use of SPSS package for health research data analysis. The workshop is organized every month at the different public sector health academic institutions.
- Bioethics Workshops This two days workshop organized in collaboration with the Center for Bioethics and Culture (CEBEC), Sindh Institute of Urology and Transplantation (SIUT), Karachi. The objective is to enhance the understanding of the principles of Bioethics and their application in health research and medical practice. One workshop is organized in a six months cycle.

Three Days Workshop on Biostatistics and SPSS hands on Training concludes
A three day workshop organized by Directorate of Research and Development (R&D) Khyber Medical University (KMU), Peshawar at Khyber Girls Medical College (KGMC), Peshawar on Bio Statistics and Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) concluded here at Peshawar.
Faculty members from KGMC and Post Graduate Medical Institute (PGMI) Hayatabad Medical Complex (HMC) participated in the workshop. VC KMU Prof. Dr. Mohammad Hafizullah was the chief guest at the concluding session.
The workshop aimed to give hand on training on Bio statistical and the use of SPSS package for health research data analysis. The objective of the workshop was to train participants in basic statistical methods and to guide them, how to enter data and perform statistical analysis using SPSS. Dr. Hamid Hussain, Dr. Iftikhar Ud Din and Dr. Sajjad delivered lectures on various topics.
In the concluding session VC KMU Prof. Dr. Mohammad Hafizullah as chief guest has appreciated the participatory role of the faculty of KGMC & PGMI HMC. He said that organizing such kind of learning and capacity building activities will help in introducing research culture in the field of Medical Education.
VC KMU Prof. Dr. Mohammad Hafizullah assured the participants that KMU would like to continue such research related activities in shape of organizing workshops and seminars in the affiliated medical institutes of KMU. At the end VC KMU Prof. Dr. Mohammad Hafizullah distributed certificate among the participants.

Khyber Medical University (KMU) announced inspection schedule for affiliation of public and private sector Medical Colleges and other Health related Institutions throughout the province.
Committee was briefed about “KMU Affiliation Statutes of Colleges / Institutions 2008” in general and the functions / responsibilities of the Affiliation Committee under the Statutes, in special. A tentative schedule has been communicated to public sector medical colleges for affiliation with University under Section 30(a) of the Khyber Medical University Act 2006 (N-W.F.P. Act No. I of 2007
According to the schedule Khyber Girls Medical College (KGMC), Peshawar would be inspected in 4th week of October while Khyber Medical College (KMC) Peshawar and Ayub Medical College (AMC), Abbottabad would be inspected in 2nd and 4th week of November 2009. Gomal Medical College (GMC) D.I. Khan and Saidu Medical College (SMC), Swat will be inspected in 1st and 3rd week of December 2009 respectively
The committee also agreed to fix date for the inspection of those Health Institutions other than Medical Colleges which fulfill the codal formalities. Dates will be fixed after circulation of copies of their application to the members of the committee for proper scrutiny and their comments / recommendations thereof. It was also decided that next time applications for affiliation of different degree programmes i.e. Bachelor’s and Master’s etc may be categorised separately in the agenda
Regarding Co-Opted Members for Inspection Committee it was decided that the Inspection Committee has to be accompanied by co-opted members from the relevant disciplines for which a college / institution is seeking affiliation. The co-opted members will be decided by the VC after fixation of dates for inspection by the affiliation committee

PROFESSOR PUBLIC HEALTH (BPS-21 / TTS): MBBS / BDS with Ph.D. in the relevant field from a HEC recognized University / Institution with 15 years teaching / research experience in HEC recognized university or a post graduate institution or professional experience in the relevant field in a national or international organization. Applicant must have 12 publications (with at least 3 publications in last 5 years) in HEC / PM&DC recognized journals. Preference will be given to MBBS as basic qualification.
ASSISTANT PROFESSOR (BPS-19 / TTS): MBBS / BDS with Ph.D. in the relevant field from a HEC recognized University / Institution with 10 years teaching / research experience in HEC recognized university or a post graduate institution or professional experience in the relevant field in a national or international organization. Applicant must have 8 publications (with at least 2 publications in last 5 years) in HEC / PM&DC recognized journals. OR
MBBS / BDS with 1st Class Master’s Degree (Foreign) or M.Phil (Pakistan) or equivalent degree awarded after 18 years of education in the relevant field from a HEC recognized University / institution. 4 years teaching / research experience in recognized university or a post-graduate Institution or professional experience in the relevant field in a National or international organization.
LECTURERS (BPS-18):
- EPIDEMIOLOGY & BIOSTATISTICS: MBBS / BDS with 1st Class (B Grade) Master’s Degree in Epidemiology & Biostatistics, with no 3rd division in the academic career from a HEC recognized University / Institution.
Preference will be given to person with experience in the relevant field.
- FAMILY MEDICINE: MBBS / BDS with 1st Class (B Grade) Masters Degree in Public Health / DCPS (Family Medicine), with no 3rd division in the academic career, from a HEC recognized University / Institution with no 3rd Division in the academic career.
CURRICULA COORDINATOR (BPS-17): 1st Class Mater Degree / MBBS or equivalent degree in health professions. OR
2nd Class Mater Degree / MBBS or equivalent degree in health professions with five years experience in the relevant field in government or semi government autonomous bodies.

Public Notice: Phd Foreign Scholarships
Reference is made to advertisement published on 28-06-2009 in National dailies regarding PhD Foreign Scholarships, It is to inform all the concerns that:
- Interview for the Selection of the PhD candidates scheduled from 10-08-2009 to 13-08-2009 has been cancelled due to technical reasons.
- 1st Division in the last degree and clearing of test under NTS with minimum 50% marks is a pre requisite as per HEC requirement.
- Test under HEC through NTS will be arranged shortly.
Two day Workshop on Clinical Research Methods” at Postgraduate Medical Institute (PGMI), Lady Reading Hospital Peshawar.
He said that this training is a part of KMU’s comprehensive strategy for institutionalizing health research within the medical academic institutions of the Province. The PGMI NWFP is a major partner in this venture and these workshops are being arranged in collaboration with PGMI.
Prof.Dr. Muhammad Hafizullah said that the important components of the strategy include infrastructure development and establishment of clinical epidemiology units in the major teaching hospitals, establishment of governance and coordination structure for oversight and monitoring of progress, setting of research priorities and development of clinical research agenda for each medical institution and development and implementation of comprehensive training programme. Director Research and Development KMU Dr.Tasleem Akhtar also spoken at the occasion. In the end chief guest distributed certificates among the participants.
A second workshop of the series of workshops on Clinical Research Methods in the major public sector medical institutions of Peshawar organized by Khyber Medical University (KMU)’s Department of Research and Development has been concluded here at Khyber Medical College (KMC) Peshawar; Vice Chancellor KMU Peshawar Prof Dr. Muhammad Hafizullah was the chief guest on the occasion.
While addressing the concluding session Prof Dr. Muhammad Hafizullah said that the continuation of such kind of learning and capacity building initiatives in the field of Medical Research are highly appreciable. He said that KMU has planned a vision 2020 for establishment of some state of the art institutions in various subspecialties of health, where not only treatment will be provided but more emphases will be on research and training. We aim to divert a major chunk of our resources for research, he added.
Prof Dr. Muhammad Hafizullah said that KMU was trying to change the curriculum gradually according to the needs and requirements of the new era at graduate level through mutual consultation with the academicians of public sector medical and Dental colleges of the province. He said we are focusing on quality evaluation process and for that purpose we established centralized marking system at KMU, which shall ensure transparency and enable us to declare results in faster way.
Earlier Director Reasearch and Development KMU Dr. Tasleem Akhtar said that the workshops aim to orientate participants to the terms and concepts of science and research, the research process and methods, application of statistical methods, and evidence-based medicine- introducing the concepts of met analysis and systematic review.
A high level meeting of Principals of private sector medical colleges of the province held at KMU
Khyber Medical University (KMU) Peshawar will facilitate all the private sector medical colleges of the province in adaptation of modern techniques of learning, curricula development and re-search related activities at undergraduate level. It was decided in a high level meeting of Principals of private sector medical colleges of the province held here at Peshawar under the chairman ship of Vice Chancellor KMU Prof. Dr. Muhammad Hafizullah.
VC KMU Prof .Dr. Muhammad Hafizullah apprised the principals of the private sector medical colleges about the decision taken so for by KMU related to research and development change of traditional mode of instruction to PBL and implementation of SEQ’s and MCQ’s type of evaluation system.
He threw light on the week long journey of search and research of the principals of Public Sector Medical Colleges of the province to Aga Khan University Karachi, Dow University of Health Sciences Karachi, Zia-ud-Din Medical University Karachi, University of Health Sciences Lahore, Quaid Azam University Islamabad and Shifa International Medical College Islamabad.
VC KMU Prof. Dr. Muhammad Hafizullah offered all possible support to the private medical colleges in transformation of curricula, Research related activities and adaptation of Problem Based Learning. He said that KMU is open for both private and public sectors and will always welcome whole heartedly both the sectors for the betterment and quality enhancement of medical education.
VC KMU told the participants that to take the private sector on board KMU has decided to give representation to the private sector medical colleges in all the statutory bodies’ i.e Senate, Syndicate and Academic Council of KMU
A two day Workshop on Problem Based Learning at CPSP Centre ,Hayatabad Peshawar concludes
A two day workshop on the Need and Path to Change Undergraduate Medical Curriculum and Mode of Instructions to problem Based Learning (PBL) organized by Khyber Medical University Peshawar has been concluded here at CPSP Centre Hayatabad Peshawar. Vice Chancellor KMU was the chief guest on the occasion. The workshop aimed to discuss and sensitize the participants on adaptation of PBL system at undergraduate level at Public Sector Medical and Dental Colleges of the province. Four each participants from all the Public Sector Medical and Dental Colleges including a Private Colleges of the province participated in the workshop.
VC KMU Prof. Dr. Muhammad Hafizullah while delivering his speech as chief guest at the concluding session said that KMU has proud to initiate this type of discussion on PBL. He said that change in the curriculum and mode of instruction at undergraduate level in the field of Medical Education was the need of the hour, together efforts in this regard will bring the fruit at par Inshallah. He appreciated the active participatory role of the senior faculty members of the Public Sector Medical and Dental Colleges of the province and hoped that they will be continue their support and co-operation in adaptation of PBL.
VC KMU assured the participant that KMU would like to continue its support and facilitation in terms of training, infrastructure and human resources development to fulfill the requirements of the affiliated medical and dental colleges of the province.
Change in curriculum and evaluation system will be adopted through mutual discussion and consultation, he added. Prof. Dr. Muhammad Hafizullah said that medical education facing a lot of problems therefore KMU has decided to bridge the gapes through involving all the Public Sector Medical and Dental Colleges of the province.
A Committee comprises of two faculty members from each Medical College of the province was also framed to review and analyze the over all curriculum and evaluation system at undergraduate level. In the end VC KMU thanked the participants and especially the facilitators Prof.Dr. Syed Shoaib Hussain Shah , Prof. Mobeen Iqbal from Shifa International Islamabad and Prof. Dr. Muhammad Idrees from Rawalpindi Medical College Rawalpindi.

KMU will Continue its support to IDP’s, VC KMU
It was stated by Prof. Dr. Muhammad Hafizullah VC KMU during his visit to the relief camp of IDP’s established by SWS KMC in collaboration with KMU, APPNA and AANA at Salim Sugar mills Charsadda, District Coordination Officer (DCO) Syed Abdul Jabbar Shah, Vice Principal KMC Peshawar, Prof. Dr. Ijaz Khattak and Prof. Dr. Fida Marwat were also Present at the occasion.
Prof. Dr. Muhammad Hafizullah while talking to the IDP’s and workers of SWS KMC has said that IDP’s are our brethrens and sisters in Islam and providing them help in shape of food items, non food items and medicines was our national and moral responsibility. He assured that KMU will continue its assistance and cooperation in terms of logistic support and providing various items to the IDP’s till return to their homes.
Prof. Dr Muhammad Hafizullah lauded the brilliant role of SWS KMC, APPNA and KMC AANA for supporting of IDP’s for the last one month. He said that KMU was playing very pivotal role in relief activities and it will continue its efforts for coordinating the relief activities during providing relief and help to the IDP’.
He assured the participants that the required items would be provided on priority basis according to the need of the IDP’s and for more assistance he will tackle the issue with the APPNA and AANA authorities during his forth coming visit of USA

PhD Foreign Scholarships
Applications under Higher Education Commission Funded project are invited from candidates possessing medical or health professional qualifications after 16 years of education, duly recognized by relevant statutory regulatory bodies of the country i.e. Pakistan Medical & Dental Council / Pakistan Nursing Council and Higher Education Commission in the following disciplines for the grant of scholarships for pursuing higher studies leading to the award of PhD degree in the HEC identified world top ranked discipline wise Universities:-
Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry, Pathology, Physiotherapy, Nursing, Public Health, Vision Sciences and Medical Education |
After completion of their respective PhD degrees, the selectees shall be required to serve on the faculty of Khyber Medical University, Peshawar for at least Five (05) years.
Eligibility Criteria
- Pakistani / AJK nationals only
- Maximum two 2nd Divisions throughout the academic career
- No 3rd division (less than 50% marks) or D-Grade in academic career.
- Maximum age on the closing date of submission of application:-
- 40-years for full time faculty members of public sector Universities / Colleges and R&D Organization.
- 35-years for all others.
- Should have minimum cumulative 50% academic marks as per HEC Academic Evaluation Formula (HEC-AEF).
- Candidates who are availing any other HEC Scholarship are not eligible to apply.
- The selected applicant will have to secure admission into PhD program or mater’s leading to a PhD in the specified disciplines in the HEC identified world top ranked discipline wise universities. The list of these universities & disciplines is available at HEC website (www.hec.edu.pk/ossphase2batch4).
Selection Criteria:
The selection of the candidates for PhD will be through open national competition by merit established through HEC AEF (Academic Evaluation Formula) for faculty members and other candidates. The applicants fulfilling the criteria will be required to appear before a selection committee of Khyber Medical University. Job will be offered to the successful candidates by the University.
